Tripping over your fingers? Here's my favourite exercise.

If you’ve ever looked into doing finger exercises before, it’s likely you’ve come across the super challenging fast-paced finger twisters that you repeat in every key into eternity – Czerny, Hanon, et al.

However, you might not have discovered that many piano teachers & pianists prefer a simpler approach in order to gain dexterity and independence in the fingers that doesn’t cause tension or potential injury.

Today I’m going to show you my favourite finger exercise - it starts simply and gets progressively more difficult each time you go up a level.

This exercise can be done daily as a quick way to check-in with your posture, alignment, technique & most importantly, laziness! (Yes, lazy is a good thing!) Laziness (or rather, relaxation) is the goal when it means using less energy to play a difficult passage, rather than more.

Who wants to be stressed, tired out and strained after playing finger exercises? Nobody! So take the gentler approach and take it back to basics by perfecting your technique to play tricky passages with easy-breezy, tequila-sunrise-on-a-beach type finger exercises!
